[184] "Hey, man (ambho purisa)": this, "hey, man," is a designation of address.¹

"What use to you is this wretched, hard life? Death would be better for you than living": Life is called "wretched" thus — compared with the life of the affluent, the life of the poor is wretched; compared with the life of those with wealth, the life of those without wealth is wretched; compared with the life of devas, the life of human beings is wretched. "Hard life" means that of one whose hand is cut off, whose foot is cut off, whose hand and foot are cut off, whose ear is cut off, whose nose is cut off, whose ear and nose are cut off. What use is this wretched and this hard life? Death would be better for you than living.
"Thus with mind (citta) and mentality (mano)": that which is mind is mentality; that which is mentality is mind.
"With such intention of mind (cittasaṅkappa)": perceiving death, intending death, aiming at death.
"In many ways": in manifold modes, high and low.
"Or should extol the beauty of death": he points out the danger in living and speaks in praise of death, saying: "When you have passed away from here, with the breaking up of the body, after death, you will be reborn in a good destination, a heavenly world; there, endowed and furnished with the five cords of divine sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇa), you will amuse yourself."
