[22] Then the Blessed One, on that occasion and in that connection, having had the Saṅgha of bhikkhus assembled, questioned that bhikkhu: "Is it true, as they say, bhikkhu, that you engaged in sexual intercourse (methuna dhamma) with a female monkey?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "Foolish man (moghapurisa), it is unbecoming, not in conformity, improper, unworthy of an ascetic, not allowable, not to be done. How could you, foolish man, having gone forth in a Dhamma and Discipline so well proclaimed, be unable to live the perfectly complete, perfectly pure holy life for as long as life lasts? Has not the Dhamma been taught by me in many ways for the fading of passion, not for passion … the stilling of the fevers of sensuality been declared? It would be better for you, foolish man, that your male organ be put into the mouth of a venomous snake of fierce venom than that your male organ be put into the female organ of a female monkey. It would be better for you, foolish man, that your male organ be put into the mouth of a black serpent than that your male organ be put into the female organ of a female monkey. It would be better for you, foolish man, that your male organ be put into a pit of coals, burning, blazing, glowing, than that your male organ be put into the female organ of a female monkey. Why is that? For on that account, foolish man, one might undergo death or death-like suffering (dukkha), but not on that account, with the breaking up of the body, after death, would one be reborn in a state of loss, a bad destination, the downfall, hell. But on this account, foolish man, with the breaking up of the body, after death, one would be reborn in a state of loss, a bad destination, the downfall, hell. And in such a case, foolish man, that you should engage in what is not the true Dhamma, the practice of villagers, the practice of the vulgar, that which is coarse, ending in water, done in secret, of couples, the attainment of coupling by two together! This, foolish man, is not for the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Whatever bhikkhu should engage in sexual intercourse, even with a female animal, is pārājika, not in communion."
And thus was this training rule laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
