[4] When this was said, the brahmin Verañja said this to the Blessed One: "Master Gotama is the eldest; Master Gotama is the best. Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent, Master Gotama! Just as, Master Gotama, one might set upright what has been overturned, or uncover what has been concealed, or point out the way to one who is lost, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes might see forms — even so has the Dhamma been made clear in many ways by Master Gotama. I go for refuge (saraṇa) to Master Gotama, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower (upāsaka) who has gone for refuge for life, from this day forward. And may Master Gotama consent to spend the rains residence (vassāvāsa) at Verañjā together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus."
The Blessed One consented by silence. Then the brahmin Verañja, having understood the Blessed One's consent, rose from his seat, paid homage to the Blessed One, circumambulated him keeping his right side towards him, and departed.
