[616] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the bhikkhus known as the followers of Assaji and Punabbasu were residents at Kīṭāgiri — shameless, evil bhikkhus. They engaged in misconduct (anācāra) of this sort: they planted flowering shrubs and had them planted; they watered them and had them watered; they plucked them and had them plucked; they strung them into garlands and had them strung; they made garlands with stalks on one side and had them made; they made garlands with stalks on both sides and had them made; they made flower-sprays (mañjarikā) and had them made; they made plume-arrangements (vidhutikā) and had them made; they made ear-ornaments of flowers (vaṭaṃsaka) and had them made; they made crest-garlands (āveḷa) and had them made; they made breast-coverings of flowers (uracchada) and had them made. To women of good families, to daughters of good families, to girls of good families, to daughters-in-law of good families, and to slave-women of good families they carried garlands with stalks on one side and had them carried; they carried garlands with stalks on both sides and had them carried; they carried flower-sprays and had them carried; they carried plume-arrangements and had them carried; they carried ear-ornaments of flowers and had them carried; they carried crest-garlands and had them carried; they carried breast-coverings of flowers and had them carried. Together with women of good families, daughters of good families, girls of good families, daughters-in-law of good families, and slave-women of good families, they ate from one dish; they drank from one vessel; they sat on one seat; they lay down on one bed; they lay down sharing one mat; they lay down sharing one covering; they lay down sharing one mat and covering. They ate at the wrong time; they drank intoxicants; they wore garlands, scents, and unguents. They danced, they sang, they played instruments, they performed. While a woman was dancing, they danced; while she was dancing, they sang; while she was dancing, they played instruments; while she was dancing, they performed. While she was singing, they danced; while she was singing, they sang; while she was singing, they played instruments; while she was singing, they performed. While she was playing an instrument, they danced; while she was playing, they sang; while she was playing, they played instruments; while she was playing, they performed. While she was performing, they danced; while she was performing, they sang; while she was performing, they played instruments; while she was performing, they performed. They played on eight-square boards; they played on ten-square boards; they played imaginary board-games in the air; they played hopscotch on marked-out paths; they played spillikans; they played at dice-throwing; they played tip-cat; they played the painted-hand game; they played with dice; they played with leaf-pipes; they played with toy ploughs; they turned somersaults; they played with toy windmills; they played with toy leaf-measures; they played with toy chariots; they played with toy bows; they played at guessing letters; they played at guessing thoughts; they played at mimicking deformities. They trained in elephant-riding; they trained in horsemanship; they trained in chariot-driving; they trained in archery; they trained in swordsmanship. They ran before elephants; they ran before horses; they ran before chariots; they ran and they ran to and fro; they whistled; they snapped their fingers; they wrestled; they fought with fists. Spreading out the outer robe (saṅghāṭi) in the middle of a performance-arena, they would say to a dancing-girl, "Dance here, sister!" and they gave signs of approval; and they engaged in various kinds of misconduct.
