[9] Then the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, this is the custom of Tathāgatas: they do not depart on a tour of the countryside without taking leave of those at whose invitation they have spent the rains. Come, Ānanda, let us take leave of the brahmin Verañja."
"So be it, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One, having dressed and taken his bowl and robe, with the Venerable Ānanda as his attendant ascetic (pacchāsamaṇa), went to the residence of the brahmin Verañja; having arrived, he sat down on the seat prepared for him. Then the brahmin Verañja approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. As the brahmin Verañja sat to one side, the Blessed One said this to him: "Brahmin, we were invited by you and have spent the rains; now we take our leave of you. We wish to depart on a tour of the countryside."
"It is true, good Gotama, that you were invited by me and have spent the rains; but the offering (deyyadhamma) that should have been given has not been given. And that is not because it does not exist, nor from any unwillingness to give — but how could it have been obtained here, since the household life has many duties, many things to be done? May the good Gotama consent to accept tomorrow's meal from me, together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus."
The Blessed One consented by silence. Then the Blessed One, having instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened the brahmin Verañja with a talk on the Dhamma, rose from his seat and departed.
Then, when that night had passed, the brahmin Verañja had excellent food, both hard and soft, prepared in his own residence, and had the time announced to the Blessed One: "It is time, good Gotama; the meal is ready."
Then in the morning the Blessed One, having dressed and taken his bowl and robe, went to the residence of the brahmin Verañja; having arrived, he sat down on the seat prepared for him, together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. Then the brahmin Verañja, with his own hands, served and satisfied the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha with excellent food, both hard and soft; and when the Blessed One had finished eating and had withdrawn his hand from the bowl, he presented him with a set of three robes, and presented each bhikkhu with a pair of cloths. Then the Blessed One, having instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened the brahmin Verañja with a talk on the Dhamma, rose from his seat and departed.
Then the Blessed One, having stayed at Verañjā as long as he wished, without stopping at Soreyya, Saṅkassa, or Kaṇṇakujja, went to Payāgapatiṭṭhāna; having arrived, he crossed the river Gaṅgā at Payāgapatiṭṭhāna and came to Bārāṇasī. Then the Blessed One, having stayed at Bārāṇasī as long as he wished, set out on tour toward Vesālī; wandering by stages, he arrived at Vesālī. There the Blessed One dwelt at Vesālī, in the Great Wood, in the Hall with the Peaked Roof.
