[136] Bhikkhus, there are these four wonderful and marvellous qualities (acchariyā abbhutadhammā) in Ānanda.
What four? Bhikkhus, if an assembly (parisā) of bhikkhus approaches to see Ānanda, that assembly is delighted at the sight of him; and if Ānanda there speaks the Dhamma, that assembly is delighted also by what he speaks; and the assembly of bhikkhus, bhikkhus, is still unsated when Ānanda then falls silent. If, bhikkhus, an assembly of bhikkhunīs approaches to see Ānanda, that assembly is delighted at the sight of him; and if Ānanda there speaks the Dhamma, that assembly is delighted also by what he speaks; and the assembly of bhikkhunīs, bhikkhus, is still unsated when Ānanda then falls silent. If, bhikkhus, an assembly of laymen (upāsaka) approaches to see Ānanda, that assembly is delighted at the sight of him; and if Ānanda there speaks the Dhamma, that assembly is delighted also by what he speaks; and the assembly of laymen, bhikkhus, is still unsated when Ānanda then falls silent. If, bhikkhus, an assembly of laywomen (upāsikā) approaches to see Ānanda, that assembly is delighted at the sight of him; and if Ānanda there speaks the Dhamma, that assembly is delighted also by what he speaks; and the assembly of laywomen, bhikkhus, is still unsated when Ānanda then falls silent. These, bhikkhus, are the four wonderful and marvellous qualities in Ānanda.
Bhikkhus, there are these four wonderful and marvellous qualities in a wheel-turning monarch (rājā cakkavattī). If, bhikkhus, an assembly of khattiyas approaches to see the wheel-turning king, that assembly is delighted at the sight of him; and if the wheel-turning king there speaks, that assembly is delighted also by what he speaks; and the assembly of khattiyas, bhikkhus, is still unsated when the wheel-turning king then falls silent. If, bhikkhus, an assembly of brahmins … an assembly of householders … an assembly of ascetics approaches to see the wheel-turning king, that assembly is delighted at the sight of him; and if the wheel-turning king there speaks, that assembly is delighted also by what he speaks; and the assembly of ascetics, bhikkhus, is still unsated when the wheel-turning king then falls silent.
Even so, bhikkhus, there are four wonderful and marvellous qualities in Ānanda. If, bhikkhus, an assembly of bhikkhus approaches to see Ānanda, that assembly is delighted at the sight of him; and if Ānanda there speaks the Dhamma, that assembly is delighted also by what he speaks; and the assembly of bhikkhus, bhikkhus, is still unsated when Ānanda then falls silent.
