[141] Then the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, it may be that you will think: 'The word of the Teacher (pāvacana) has a Teacher who is past; we have no Teacher.' But, Ānanda, it should not be seen thus. The Dhamma and the Vinaya that I have taught and laid down for you — that shall be your Teacher when I am gone. And, Ānanda, whereas now the bhikkhus address one another with the word 'āvuso' (friend), after I am gone they should not address one another thus. A more senior bhikkhu may address a more junior bhikkhu by name, by clan, or with the word 'āvuso'; but a more junior bhikkhu should address a more senior bhikkhu as 'bhante' or 'āyasmā.' Ānanda, if it wishes, the Saṅgha may, when I am gone, abolish the lesser and minor training rules (sikkhāpada). Ānanda, when I am gone, the supreme penalty (brahmadaṇḍa) should be imposed upon the bhikkhu Channa."
"But what, venerable sir, is the supreme penalty?"
"Ānanda, let the bhikkhu Channa say whatever he wishes; he is not to be spoken to, not to be admonished, and not to be instructed by the bhikkhus."
