[144] Then the Blessed One entered the first jhāna (paṭhamajjhāna). Having emerged from the first jhāna, he entered the second jhāna. Having emerged from the second jhāna, he entered the third jhāna. Having emerged from the third jhāna, he entered the fourth jhāna. Having emerged from the fourth jhāna, he entered the base of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana). Having emerged from the attainment (samāpatti) of the base of the infinity of space, he entered the base of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana). Having emerged from the attainment of the base of the infinity of consciousness, he entered the base of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana). Having emerged from the attainment of the base of nothingness, he entered the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana). Having emerged from the attainment of the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, he entered the cessation of perception and feeling (saññāvedayitanirodha).
Then the Venerable Ānanda said this to the Venerable Anuruddha: "Venerable Anuruddha, has the Blessed One attained final Nibbāna (parinibbuta)?" "No, friend Ānanda, the Blessed One has not attained final Nibbāna; he has entered the cessation of perception and feeling."
Then the Blessed One, having emerged from the attainment of the cessation of perception and feeling, entered the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. Having emerged from the attainment of the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, he entered the base of nothingness. Having emerged from the attainment of the base of nothingness, he entered the base of the infinity of consciousness. Having emerged from the attainment of the base of the infinity of consciousness, he entered the base of the infinity of space. Having emerged from the attainment of the base of the infinity of space, he entered the fourth jhāna. Having emerged from the fourth jhāna, he entered the third jhāna. Having emerged from the third jhāna, he entered the second jhāna. Having emerged from the second jhāna, he entered the first jhāna. Having emerged from the first jhāna, he entered the second jhāna. Having emerged from the second jhāna, he entered the third jhāna. Having emerged from the third jhāna, he entered the fourth jhāna. Having emerged from the fourth jhāna, immediately thereafter the Blessed One attained final Nibbāna.
