[155] Now at that time one named Subhadda, who had gone forth in old age, was seated in that assembly. Then Subhadda, the one gone forth in old age, said to those bhikkhus: "Enough, friends! Do not sorrow, do not lament. We are well freed from that Great Ascetic. We have been oppressed (with): 'This is allowable (kappati) for you; this is not allowable for you.'¹ But now we shall do whatever we wish, and whatever we do not wish we shall not do."
Then Mahākassapa addressed the bhikkhus: "Enough, friends! Do not sorrow, do not lament. Has it not, friends, been declared beforehand by the Blessed One that there is difference, separation, and alteration from all that is dear and beloved? How then, friends, could this be obtained here: 'May that which is born, come to be, conditioned, and subject to disintegration not disintegrate!'—such a thing is not possible."
