[157] King Ajātasattu of Magadha, son of the Videhan princess, heard: "The Blessed One, it is said, has attained final Nibbāna (parinibbuta) at Kusinārā." Then King Ajātasattu of Magadha, son of the Videhan princess, sent an envoy to the Mallas of Kusinārā, saying: "The Blessed One was a khattiya, and I too am a khattiya. I am worthy of a share of the Blessed One's remains (sarīra); I too shall build a stūpa (thūpa) over the Blessed One's remains and hold a festival." The Licchavis of Vesālī heard: "The Blessed One, it is said, has attained final Nibbāna at Kusinārā." Then the Licchavis of Vesālī sent an envoy to the Mallas of Kusinārā, saying: "The Blessed One was a khattiya, and we too are khattiyas. We too are worthy of a share of the Blessed One's remains; we too shall build a stūpa over the Blessed One's remains and hold a festival." The Sakyas of Kapilavatthu heard: "The Blessed One, it is said, has attained final Nibbāna at Kusinārā." Then the Sakyas of Kapilavatthu sent an envoy to the Mallas of Kusinārā, saying: "The Blessed One was the foremost of our kin. We too are worthy of a share of the Blessed One's remains; we too shall build a stūpa over the Blessed One's remains and hold a festival." The Thūlayas of Allakappa heard: "The Blessed One, it is said, has attained final Nibbāna at Kusinārā." Then the Thūlayas of Allakappa sent an envoy to the Mallas of Kusinārā, saying: "The Blessed One was a khattiya, and we too are khattiyas. We too are worthy of a share of the Blessed One's remains; we too shall build a stūpa over the Blessed One's remains and hold a festival." The Koḷiyas of Rāmagāma heard: "The Blessed One, it is said, has attained final Nibbāna at Kusinārā." Then the Koḷiyas of Rāmagāma sent an envoy to the Mallas of Kusinārā, saying: "The Blessed One was a khattiya, and we too are khattiyas. We too are worthy of a share of the Blessed One's remains; we too shall build a stūpa over the Blessed One's remains and hold a festival." The brahmin of Veṭṭhadīpa heard: "The Blessed One, it is said, has attained final Nibbāna at Kusinārā." Then the brahmin of Veṭṭhadīpa sent an envoy to the Mallas of Kusinārā, saying: "The Blessed One was a khattiya, and I am a brahmin. I too am worthy of a share of the Blessed One's remains; I too shall build a stūpa over the Blessed One's remains and hold a festival." The Mallas of Pāvā heard: "The Blessed One, it is said, has attained final Nibbāna at Kusinārā." Then the Mallas of Pāvā sent an envoy to the Mallas of Kusinārā, saying: "The Blessed One was a khattiya, and we too are khattiyas. We too are worthy of a share of the Blessed One's remains; we too shall build a stūpa over the Blessed One's remains and hold a festival." When this was said, the Mallas of Kusinārā said to those assemblies and groups: "The Blessed One attained final Nibbāna within the domain of our village; we shall not give away a share of the Blessed One's remains."
