[202] "Sirs, here a certain person dwells mixed up with sensual pleasures, mixed up with unwholesome states. At a later time he hears the Dhamma of the noble ones, attends to it with wise attention (yoniso manasikāra), and practices in accordance with the Dhamma. Owing to his hearing of the Dhamma of the noble ones and his wise attention, he practices in accordance with the Dhamma, and he dwells unmixed with sensual pleasures, unmixed with unwholesome states. For him, dwelling unmixed with sensual pleasures, unmixed with unwholesome states, there arises pleasure, and beyond pleasure, gladness—just as, sirs, joy (pāmojja) might arise from delight. Even so, sirs, for one unmixed with sensual pleasures, unmixed with unwholesome states, there arises pleasure, and beyond pleasure, gladness. This, sirs, is the first attainment of an opening (okāsādhigama), understood by that Blessed One who knows, who sees, the Accomplished One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, for the attainment of happiness."
