[204] "Furthermore, sirs, here someone does not understand as it really is (yathābhūta), 'This is wholesome (kusala)'; does not understand as it really is, 'This is unwholesome (akusala)'; does not understand as it really is, 'This is blameworthy'; does not understand as it really is, 'This is blameless'; does not understand as it really is, 'This is to be cultivated'; does not understand as it really is, 'This is not to be cultivated'; does not understand as it really is, 'This is inferior'; does not understand as it really is, 'This is superior'; does not understand as it really is, 'This has its counterpart in the dark and the bright.' On a later occasion he hears the Dhamma of the noble ones, attends to it wisely (yoniso manasikāra), and practices in accordance with the Dhamma (dhammānudhamma). Relying on hearing the Dhamma of the noble ones and on wise attention, he practices in accordance with the Dhamma, and he understands as it really is, 'This is wholesome'; he understands as it really is, 'This is unwholesome'; he understands as it really is, 'This is blameworthy'; he understands as it really is, 'This is blameless'; he understands as it really is, 'This is to be cultivated'; he understands as it really is, 'This is not to be cultivated'; he understands as it really is, 'This is inferior'; he understands as it really is, 'This is superior'; he understands as it really is, 'This has its counterpart in the dark and the bright.' As he thus knows and thus sees, ignorance (avijjā) is abandoned and true knowledge (vijjā) arises. With the fading away of ignorance and the arising of true knowledge, there arises in him happiness (sukha), and beyond happiness, gladness (somanassa). Just as, sirs, from delight gladness might be born, even so, sirs, with the fading away of ignorance and the arising of true knowledge there arises happiness, and beyond happiness, gladness. This, sirs, is the third attainment of an opening (okāsādhigama), awakened to by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One, for the attainment of happiness. These, sirs, are the three attainments of an opening, awakened to by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Fully Enlightened One, for the attainment of happiness."
