[263] "Venerable sir, once in the past a battle between the gods and the asuras was fully arrayed. In that battle, venerable sir, the gods conquered and the asuras were defeated. Venerable sir, when I had won that battle, being victorious in the battle, this occurred to me: 'Now the gods shall enjoy here both nutritive essences (ojā) — the divine nutritive essence and the asura nutritive essence.' But that gaining of joy (vedapaṭilābha), that gaining of gladness (somanassapaṭilābha) of mine, venerable sir, was in the sphere of the rod, in the sphere of the sword; it does not conduce to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation (nirodha), to peace, to direct knowledge, to full awakening, to Nibbāna. But this gaining of joy, this gaining of gladness of mine, venerable sir, that comes from hearing the Dhamma of the Blessed One, is not in the sphere of the rod, not in the sphere of the sword; it conduces exclusively to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation, to peace, to direct knowledge, to full awakening, to Nibbāna."
"But seeing what advantage, lord of gods, do you declare such a gaining of joy, such a gaining of gladness?"
"Venerable sir, seeing six advantages I declare such a gaining of joy, such a gaining of gladness."
