[318] "Though the worthy Kassapa says this, still I am not able to relinquish this evil view. King Pasenadi of Kosala knows me, and foreign kings too know me thus: 'The chieftain Pāyāsi holds this doctrine, this view: "There is no other world; there are no beings spontaneously reborn; there is no fruit or result of deeds well done or ill done."' If, worthy Kassapa, I relinquish this evil view, there will be those who will say of me: 'How foolish is the chieftain Pāyāsi, how incompetent — a grasper of what is wrongly grasped!' I shall carry it on out of anger; I shall carry it on out of contempt (makkha); I shall carry it on out of spite (paḷāsa)."
