[326] "Even though the worthy Kassapa says this, still I am not able to relinquish this evil view (pāpakaṃ diṭṭhigataṃ). King Pasenadi of Kosala knows me, and so do the kings abroad, thus: 'The chieftain Pāyāsi holds such a doctrine, such a view: "There is no world beyond; there are no spontaneously reborn beings (opapātika); there is no fruit or result of deeds well done or ill done."' If, worthy Kassapa, I were to relinquish this evil view, there would be those who would say of me: 'How foolish is the chieftain Pāyāsi, how incompetent — one who grasps what is wrongly grasped!' Out of anger I shall carry this view onward; out of contempt (makkha) I shall carry it onward; out of spite (palāsa) I shall carry it onward!"
