[48] Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One: "To whom should I first teach the Dhamma? Who will understand this Dhamma quickly?" Then, bhikkhus, it occurred to the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One: "This Khaṇḍa, the king's son, and Tissa, the purohita's son, dwelling in the royal capital Bandhumatī, are wise, competent, and intelligent, and have long had but little dust in their eyes. Suppose I were to teach the Dhamma first to Khaṇḍa, the king's son, and to Tissa, the purohita's son: they will understand this Dhamma quickly." Then, bhikkhus, just as a strong man might stretch out his bent arm or bend back his outstretched arm, so the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, vanished from the foot of the Bodhi tree and appeared in the Khema deer park at the royal capital Bandhumatī. Then, bhikkhus, the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, addressed the keeper of the deer park: "Come, friend deer-park keeper, enter the royal capital Bandhumatī and say this to Khaṇḍa, the king's son, and to Tissa, the purohita's son: 'The Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, has arrived at the royal capital Bandhumatī and is dwelling in the Khema deer park. He desires to see you.'" "Yes, venerable sir," the deer-park keeper replied to the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One; and having entered the royal capital Bandhumatī, he said this to Khaṇḍa, the king's son, and to Tissa, the purohita's son: "The Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, has arrived at the royal capital Bandhumatī and is dwelling in the Khema deer park. He desires to see you." Then, bhikkhus, Khaṇḍa, the king's son, and Tissa, the purohita's son, had the finest carriages harnessed; and mounting a fine carriage, they set out with the fine carriages from the royal capital Bandhumatī, heading for the Khema deer park. Having gone by carriage as far as the ground allowed for carriages, they descended from the carriages and approached on foot the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One; and having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, they sat down to one side. The Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, gave them a progressive discourse (anupubbīkathā), that is: he declared talk on giving, talk on virtue, talk on the heavens; the danger, degradation, and defilement of sensual pleasures, and the blessing of renunciation (nekkhamma). When the Blessed One knew that their minds were ready, pliant, free from the hindrances (nīvaraṇa), uplifted, and confident, then he declared the Dhamma teaching which the Buddhas themselves have exalted: suffering (dukkha), origin (samudaya), cessation (nirodha), path (magga). Just as a clean cloth, free from stains, would properly take the dye, even so, in that very seat, there arose in Khaṇḍa, the king's son, and in Tissa, the purohita's son, the stainless, immaculate vision of the Dhamma (dhammacakkhu): "Whatever is of a nature to arise, all that is of a nature to cease." They, having seen the Dhamma, attained the Dhamma, understood the Dhamma, and fathomed the Dhamma, having crossed beyond doubt (vicikicchā), with perplexity gone, having attained self-confidence, independent of others in the Teacher's dispensation, said this to the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One: "Magnificent, venerable sir! Magnificent, venerable sir! Just as one might set upright what has been overturned, or uncover what has been concealed, or point out the way to one who is lost, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes might see forms, even so has the Dhamma been made clear in many ways by the Blessed One. We here, venerable sir, go for refuge to the Blessed One and to the Dhamma. May we receive the going forth in the Blessed One's presence; may we receive the higher ordination." And, bhikkhus, Khaṇḍa, the king's son, and Tissa, the purohita's son, received the going forth in the presence of the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One; they received the higher ordination. Then the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened them with a talk on the Dhamma; he declared the danger, degradation, and defilement of conditioned things (saṅkhārā), and the blessing of renunciation. And as they were being instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened by the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, with a talk on the Dhamma, before long their minds (citta) were liberated from the taints (āsava) through non-clinging.
