[50] Bhikkhus, those eighty-four thousand renunciates heard: "It is said that the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, has arrived at the royal capital of Bandhumatī and is dwelling in the Khema Deer Park; and it is said that he is teaching the Dhamma." Then, bhikkhus, those eighty-four thousand renunciates went to the royal capital of Bandhumatī, to the Khema Deer Park, to where the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, was; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, and sat down to one side. The Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, gave them a progressive discourse (anupubbīkathā), that is: he set forth talk on giving, talk on virtue, talk on heaven; the danger, degradation, and defilement of sensual pleasures; and the benefit of renunciation (nekkhamma). When the Blessed One knew that their minds (citta) were ready, pliant, free from the hindrances (nīvaraṇa), uplifted, and confident, he then set forth the Dhamma teaching that the Buddhas themselves have exalted: suffering (dukkha), origin (samudaya), cessation (nirodha), the path (magga). Just as a clean cloth free from stain would take the dye evenly, even so, in those eighty-four thousand renunciates, right there in their seats, there arose the stainless, spotless eye of the Dhamma (dhammacakkhu): "Whatever is of a nature to arise, all that is of a nature to cease." Having seen the Dhamma, attained the Dhamma, understood the Dhamma, fathomed the Dhamma, having crossed beyond doubt (vicikicchā), with perplexity gone, having attained self-confidence, independent of others in the Teacher's dispensation, they said this to the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One: "Magnificent, venerable sir! Magnificent, venerable sir! Just as, venerable sir, one might set upright what has been overturned, or uncover what has been concealed, or point out the way to one who is lost, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes may see forms — even so has the Dhamma been made clear by the Blessed One in many ways. We here, venerable sir, go to the Blessed One for refuge, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May we receive, venerable sir, the going forth in the presence of the Blessed One; may we receive the higher ordination."
Bhikkhus, those eighty-four thousand renunciates received the going forth in the presence of the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One; they received the higher ordination. The Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened them with a talk on the Dhamma; he set forth the danger, degradation, and defilement of conditioned formations (saṅkhārā), and the benefit of renunciation. As they were being instructed, roused, inspired, and gladdened with a talk on the Dhamma by the Blessed One Vipassī, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, before long their minds were liberated from the taints (āsava) through non-clinging.
