[56] Thus indeed, bhikkhus, this principle of the Dhamma (dhammadhātu) has been thoroughly penetrated by the Tathāgata; and it is through the thorough penetration of that principle of the Dhamma that the Tathāgata recollects the Buddhas of the past — who have attained final Nibbāna, who have cut through proliferation (papañca), cut off the course, exhausted the round, and transcended all suffering (dukkha) — recollecting them by birth, by name, by clan, by the measure of their lifespan, by their pair of disciples, and by their assemblies of disciples, thus: 'Of such birth were those Blessed Ones; of such names, of such clans, of such virtue, of such qualities, of such wisdom, of such dwelling, of such liberation were those Blessed Ones.'
The deities too made this matter known to the Tathāgata, whereby the Tathāgata recollects the Buddhas of the past — who have attained final Nibbāna, who have cut through proliferation, cut off the course, exhausted the round, and transcended all suffering — recollecting them by birth, by name, by clan, by the measure of their lifespan, by their pair of disciples, and by their assemblies of disciples, thus: 'Of such birth were those Blessed Ones; of such names, of such clans, of such virtue, of such qualities, of such wisdom, of such dwelling, of such liberation were those Blessed Ones.'
Thus spoke the Blessed One. Delighted, those bhikkhus rejoiced in the words of the Blessed One.
