Mahāparinibbānasutta

[86] Then the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Come, Ānanda, let us go to Koṭigāma." "Yes, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus, arrived at Koṭigāma. There, it is said, the Blessed One dwelt at Koṭigāma. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, not penetrating four noble truths (ariyasacca) that both I and you have run on and wandered this long course of transmigration. Which four? Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, not penetrating the noble truth of suffering (dukkha) that both I and you have run on and wandered this long course of transmigration. Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, not penetrating the noble truth of the origin (samudaya) of suffering that both I and you have run on and wandered this long course of transmigration. Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, not penetrating the noble truth of the cessation (nirodha) of suffering that both I and you have run on and wandered this long course of transmigration. Bhikkhus, it is through not understanding, not penetrating the noble truth of the way of practice (paṭipadā) leading to the cessation of suffering that both I and you have run on and wandered this long course of transmigration. "Now, bhikkhus, this noble truth of suffering has been understood and penetrated; the noble truth of the origin of suffering has been understood and penetrated; the noble truth of the cessation of suffering has been understood and penetrated; the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering has been understood and penetrated. Craving for existence (bhavataṇhā) has been cut off; the conduit to existence is exhausted; now there is no renewed existence." This is what the Blessed One said. Having said this, the Sublime One, the Teacher, further said this:
