[90] Then the Blessed One, having dwelt at Nādika as long as he pleased, addressed the Venerable Ānanda: "Come, Ānanda, let us go to Vesālī." "Yes, venerable sir," the Venerable Ānanda replied to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus, arrived at Vesālī. There the Blessed One dwelt near Vesālī in Ambapālī's Grove. There the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu should dwell with mindfulness (sati) and clearly comprehending (sampajāno). This is our instruction to you. "And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu mindful? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body (kāyānupassī), ardent (ātāpī), clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world (abhijjhā-domanassa). With regard to feelings (vedanā) … With regard to the mind (citta) … He dwells contemplating dhammas in dhammas, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and grief regarding the world. Thus, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is mindful. "And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu clearly comprehending? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu acts with clear comprehension in going forward and in returning; he acts with clear comprehension in looking ahead and in looking aside; he acts with clear comprehension in bending and in stretching; he acts with clear comprehension in bearing the outer robe (saṅghāṭi), bowl, and robe; he acts with clear comprehension in eating, in drinking, in chewing, and in tasting; he acts with clear comprehension in the acts of defecating and urinating; he acts with clear comprehension in walking, in standing, in sitting, in sleeping, in waking, in speaking, and in keeping silent. Thus, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is clearly comprehending. "Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu should dwell mindful and clearly comprehending. This is our instruction to you."
