[98] "Ānanda, there are these eight causes (hetu), eight conditions (paccaya), for the manifestation of a great earthquake. What are the eight?
Ānanda, this great earth is established upon water; the water is established upon wind; the wind stands in space. There comes a time, Ānanda, when great winds blow; the great winds, blowing, stir the water; the water, being stirred, makes the earth quake. This is the first cause, the first condition, for the manifestation of a great earthquake.
Furthermore, Ānanda, there is an ascetic or a brahmin possessed of psychic power, who has attained mastery of mind (citta), or a deity of great power, of great might. He has developed a limited perception of earth and a measureless perception of water. He makes this earth shake, quake, tremble, and shudder. This is the second cause, the second condition, for the manifestation of a great earthquake.
Furthermore, Ānanda, when the Bodhisatta, passing away from the Tusita host, with mindfulness (sati) and clearly comprehending (sampajāno), descends into his mother's womb, then this earth shakes, quakes, trembles, and shudders. This is the third cause, the third condition, for the manifestation of a great earthquake.
Furthermore, Ānanda, when the Bodhisatta, mindful and clearly comprehending, comes forth from his mother's womb, then this earth shakes, quakes, trembles, and shudders. This is the fourth cause, the fourth condition, for the manifestation of a great earthquake.
Furthermore, Ānanda, when the Tathāgata fully awakens to the unsurpassed perfect awakening, then this earth shakes, quakes, trembles, and shudders. This is the fifth cause, the fifth condition, for the manifestation of a great earthquake.
Furthermore, Ānanda, when the Tathāgata sets rolling the unsurpassed Wheel of Dhamma, then this earth shakes, quakes, trembles, and shudders. This is the sixth cause, the sixth condition, for the manifestation of a great earthquake.
Furthermore, Ānanda, when the Tathāgata, mindful and clearly comprehending, relinquishes the vital formation (āyusaṅkhāra), then this earth shakes, quakes, trembles, and shudders. This is the seventh cause, the seventh condition, for the manifestation of a great earthquake.
Furthermore, Ānanda, when the Tathāgata attains final Nibbāna in the Nibbāna-element without residue remaining (anupādisesā nibbānadhātu), then this earth shakes, quakes, trembles, and shudders. This is the eighth cause, the eighth condition, for the manifestation of a great earthquake.
These, Ānanda, are the eight causes, the eight conditions, for the manifestation of a great earthquake."
