[117] Cunda, it is possible that wanderers of other sects might speak thus: "The ascetics who are sons of the Sakyan dwell without steadfastness in their teachings (aṭṭhitadhammā)." Cunda, wanderers of other sects who speak thus should be told: "Friend, there are indeed teachings that have been taught and laid down for his disciples by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, not to be transgressed for as long as life lasts. Friend, just as a locking-post or an iron post with a deep base, well planted, is immovable and unshakable, even so, friend, there are teachings that have been taught and laid down for his disciples by that Blessed One who knows and sees, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One, not to be transgressed for as long as life lasts.
"Friend, a bhikkhu who is an arahant, one whose taints (āsava) are destroyed, who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached his own goal, utterly destroyed the fetters of existence, and is liberated through right final knowledge—that bhikkhu is incapable of transgressing in nine respects. Friend, a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of intentionally depriving a living being of life; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of taking what is not given, in a manner reckoned as theft; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of engaging in sexual intercourse; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of speaking a deliberate lie; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of enjoying sensual pleasures by storing them up, as he did formerly when a householder; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of taking a wrong course out of desire; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of taking a wrong course out of hatred; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of taking a wrong course out of delusion; a bhikkhu whose taints are destroyed is incapable of taking a wrong course out of fear. Friend, a bhikkhu who is an arahant, one whose taints are destroyed, who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached his own goal, utterly destroyed the fetters of existence, and is liberated through right final knowledge—that bhikkhu is indeed incapable of transgressing in these nine respects."
