[159] Not with a glaring stare did he look, nor askance,
nor yet with a covert, sidelong glance;
direct, and likewise open, upright in mind,
he looked upon the many folk with a kindly eye.
In happy destinations he experienced
the fruit and result, and there he rejoiced;
and here he has the eyelashes of a cow
and eyes of deep blue, fair to behold.
Men practised and astute,
expert in signs with their many terms,
skilled in eyes with the lashes of a cow,
rejoice over him: "He is one lovely to behold."
Lovely to behold while yet a householder,
he becomes the beloved of the multitude;
but if the householder becomes an ascetic,
he is dear to many, a destroyer of sorrow.
