[173] Then the Blessed One, having dressed in the morning, taking bowl and robe, entered Rājagaha for alms. The Blessed One saw Siṅgālaka the householder's son, who had risen early and gone out from Rājagaha and, with wet clothes and wet hair, palms joined in reverence, was paying homage to the various quarters — the eastern quarter, the southern quarter, the western quarter, the northern quarter, the lower quarter, and the upper quarter. Having seen him, he said this to Siṅgālaka the householder's son: "Why is it, householder's son, that you, having risen early and gone out from Rājagaha, with wet clothes and wet hair, palms joined in reverence, are paying homage to the various quarters — the eastern quarter … the upper quarter?"
"Venerable sir, my father, when he was dying, spoke thus: 'Dear son, you should pay homage to the quarters.' So I, venerable sir, honoring, respecting, esteeming, and venerating my father's word, having risen early and gone out from Rājagaha, with wet clothes and wet hair, palms joined in reverence, pay homage to the various quarters — the eastern quarter … the upper quarter."
"Householder's son, in the discipline of the Noble One the six quarters are not to be paid homage to in this way."
"But how then, venerable sir, in the discipline of the Noble One are the six quarters to be paid homage to? It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would teach me the Dhamma in such a way as the six quarters are to be paid homage to in the discipline of the Noble One."
