[207] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha, on the mountain Gijjhakūṭa. Then the Four Great Kings (cattāro mahārājā) — with a great army of yakkhas, a great army of gandhabbas, a great army of kumbhaṇḍas, and a great army of nāgas — having set a guard over the four quarters, having stationed troops at the four quarters, and having posted a watch at the four quarters, when the night was far advanced, of surpassing beauty, illuminating the entire Gijjhakūṭa, approached the Blessed One; and having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side.
And those yakkhas too: some paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side; some exchanged greetings with the Blessed One and, having concluded the courteous and amiable talk, sat down to one side; some extended their joined palms in reverential salutation toward the Blessed One and sat down to one side; some announced their name and clan and sat down to one side; and some, remaining silent, sat down to one side.
