[213] 'From here, that is the northern quarter' —
so do people point it out;
the quarter over which keeps guard
a Great King, that glorious one —
the overlord of the yakkhas (yakkha),
Kuvera by name:
he delights in dance and song,
attended in honor by the yakkhas.
He has many sons as well,
all of a single name — so I have heard —
eighty and ten and one,
named Inda, of great might.
And they too, having seen the Buddha —
the Buddha, Kinsman of the Sun (Ādiccabandhu) —
pay homage from afar
to the great one, free from timidity:
'Homage to you, thoroughbred among men!
Homage to you, supreme among men!
With skill you look upon [beings];
even the non-humans revere you.'
This have we heard many a time;
therefore do we speak thus:
'Do you revere Gotama the Victor (jina)?' —
'We revere Gotama the Victor,
accomplished in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct:
we revere Gotama the Buddha.'
