[222] Now at that time a new council hall (santhāgāra) named Ubbhaṭaka, belonging to the Mallas of Pāvā, had recently been built, and it had not yet been dwelt in by any ascetic or brahmin or by any human being at all. The Mallas of Pāvā heard: "The Blessed One, it is said, wandering on tour among the Mallas together with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus, some five hundred bhikkhus, has arrived at Pāvā and is dwelling at Pāvā in the mango grove of Cunda the smith's son."
Then the Mallas of Pāvā approached the Blessed One; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Mallas of Pāvā said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, a new council hall named Ubbhaṭaka, belonging to the Mallas of Pāvā, has recently been built, and it has not yet been dwelt in by any ascetic or brahmin or by any human being at all. Venerable sir, may the Blessed One use it first; when it has first been used by the Blessed One, afterwards the Mallas of Pāvā will use it. That would be for the lasting benefit and happiness of the Mallas of Pāvā." The Blessed One consented by remaining silent.
Then the Mallas of Pāvā, having understood the Blessed One's consent, rose from their seats, paid homage to the Blessed One, and circumambulated him, keeping him on their right; then they went to the council hall. Having gone there, they spread the council hall with coverings throughout, prepared seats, set up a water-pot, and raised an oil lamp. Then they approached the Blessed One; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and stood to one side. Standing to one side, the Mallas of Pāvā said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the council hall has been spread with coverings throughout, the seats have been prepared, the water-pot has been set up, and the oil lamp has been raised. Now, venerable sir, let the Blessed One do as he thinks fit."
