[29] When the householder Sandhāna knew, "Assuredly, now these wanderers of other sects wish to hear the Blessed One's speech; they lend ear and set their minds on understanding," he then said this to the wanderer Nigrodha: "Honorable Nigrodha, you said this to me: 'Come now, householder, you should know: with whom does the ascetic Gotama converse? With whom does he engage in discussion? With whom does he attain lucidity of wisdom? The ascetic Gotama's wisdom is ruined by empty dwellings; the ascetic Gotama does not move about in assemblies; he is not capable of conversation; he keeps only to the remote outskirts. Just as a one-eyed cow, circling the periphery, keeps only to the remote outskirts, even so the ascetic Gotama's wisdom is ruined by empty dwellings; the ascetic Gotama does not move about in assemblies; he is not capable of conversation; he keeps only to the remote outskirts. Come, householder, were the ascetic Gotama to come to this assembly, with a single question we would sink him; like an empty pot, I fancy, we would roll him up.' Now, venerable sir, that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Fully Awakened One, has arrived here. So make him one who does not move about in assemblies; make him a one-eyed cow circling the periphery; sink him with a single question; like an empty pot, I fancy, roll him up!" When this was said, the wanderer Nigrodha sat silent, dismayed, shoulders drooping, head down, brooding, unable to make a reply.
