[345] Eight bases of giving (dānavatthu):
1. One gives a gift on encountering (āsajja) [a recipient who has arrived].
2. One gives a gift out of fear.
3. One gives a gift thinking, 'He gave to me.'
4. One gives a gift thinking, 'He will give to me.'
5. One gives a gift thinking, 'Giving is good.'
6. One gives a gift thinking, 'I cook; these people do not cook. It would not be fitting for me, who cooks, not to give to those who do not cook.'
7. One gives a gift thinking, 'As I give this gift, a fine report of good repute spreads abroad.'
8. One gives a gift for the sake of adorning the mind (citta) and equipping the mind.
