[353] **Nine abodes of beings (sattāvāsā)**
1. Friends, there are beings diverse in body and diverse in perception, such as human beings, some gods (devā), and some beings in the lower realms (vinipātikā). This is the first abode of beings.
2. Friends, there are beings diverse in body but uniform in perception, such as the gods of Brahmā's host (brahmakāyikā), generated by the first [jhāna]. This is the second abode of beings.
3. Friends, there are beings uniform in body but diverse in perception, such as the Ābhassara gods. This is the third abode of beings.
4. Friends, there are beings uniform in body and uniform in perception, such as the Subhakiṇha gods. This is the fourth abode of beings.
5. Friends, there are beings who are non-percipient, without experience, such as the gods who are non-percipient beings (asaññasattā). This is the fifth abode of beings.
6. Friends, there are beings who, with the complete transcending of perceptions of form, with the passing away of perceptions of resistance, with non-attention to perceptions of diversity, [aware that] "space is infinite," have attained the base of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana). This is the sixth abode of beings.
7. Friends, there are beings who, having completely transcended the base of the infinity of space, [aware that] "consciousness is infinite," have attained the base of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana). This is the seventh abode of beings.
8. Friends, there are beings who, having completely transcended the base of the infinity of consciousness, [aware that] "there is nothing at all," have attained the base of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana). This is the eighth abode of beings.
9. Friends, there are beings who, having completely transcended the base of nothingness, [aware that] "this is peaceful, this is sublime," have attained the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana). This is the ninth abode of beings.
