[93] When this was said, the Venerable Udāyi said to the Blessed One: "It is wonderful, venerable sir, it is marvellous, venerable sir — the fewness of wishes (appicchatā), the contentment (santuṭṭhitā), the effacement (sallekhatā) of the Tathāgata — in that the Tathāgata, being of such great psychic power, of such great majesty, will nevertheless not make himself known! Venerable sir, if the wanderers of other sects were to perceive in themselves even a single quality (dhamma) out of these, on that account alone they would carry a banner about. It is wonderful, venerable sir, it is marvellous, venerable sir — the fewness of wishes, the contentment, the effacement of the Tathāgata — in that the Tathāgata, being of such great psychic power, of such great majesty, will nevertheless not make himself known!"
"See, Udāyi, the fewness of wishes, the contentment, the effacement of the Tathāgata — in that the Tathāgata, being of such great psychic power, of such great majesty, will nevertheless not make himself known. If, Udāyi, the wanderers of other sects were to perceive in themselves even a single quality out of these, on that account alone they would carry a banner about. See, Udāyi, the fewness of wishes, the contentment, the effacement of the Tathāgata — in that the Tathāgata, being of such great psychic power, of such great majesty, will nevertheless not make himself known."
Then the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Sāriputta: "Since it is so, Sāriputta, you should speak this exposition of the Dhamma (dhammapariyāya) frequently to the bhikkhus, to the bhikkhunīs, to the male lay followers, and to the female lay followers. For, Sāriputta, in whatever foolish men (moghapurisā) there shall be doubt or uncertainty regarding the Tathāgata, when they have heard this exposition of the Dhamma, that doubt or uncertainty regarding the Tathāgata will be abandoned."
Thus indeed did the Venerable Sāriputta declare his confidence (sampasāda) in the presence of the Blessed One. Therefore the designation of this exposition (veyyākaraṇa) is precisely "Sampasādanīya" (That Which Inspires Confidence).
The Sampasādanīya Sutta, the fifth, is finished.
