[95] Then the novice (samaṇuddesa) Cunda, having spent the rains residence at Pāvā, approached the Venerable Ānanda at Sāmagāma; and having approached, he paid homage to the Venerable Ānanda and sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the novice Cunda said this to the Venerable Ānanda: "Venerable sir, the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta has recently died at Pāvā. With his death the Nigaṇṭhas have split, divided into two factions … with its monument broken, without a refuge." When this was said, the Venerable Ānanda said this to the novice Cunda: "Friend Cunda, this is a topic of talk worth bringing (kathāpābhata) for seeing the Blessed One. Come, friend Cunda, let us go to where the Blessed One is; and having approached, let us report this matter to the Blessed One." "Yes, venerable sir," the novice Cunda replied to the Venerable Ānanda. Then the Venerable Ānanda and the novice Cunda went to where the Blessed One was; and having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Ānanda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, this novice Cunda says thus: 'Venerable sir, the Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta has recently died at Pāvā. With his death the Nigaṇṭhas have split … with its monument broken, without a refuge.'"
