[99] But here, Cunda, a teacher is a Perfectly Awakened One (sammāsambuddha), and the Dhamma is well expounded, well proclaimed, emancipating, conducive to peace, made known by a Perfectly Awakened One; and a disciple in that Dhamma dwells practicing in accordance with the Dhamma, practicing properly, conducting himself in conformity with the Dhamma; having undertaken that Dhamma, he carries on. He should be told thus: 'It is a great gain for you, friend; you have gained well. For your teacher is an Arahant, a Perfectly Awakened One, and the Dhamma is well expounded, well proclaimed, emancipating, conducive to peace, made known by a Perfectly Awakened One; and you, in that Dhamma, dwell practicing in accordance with the Dhamma, practicing properly, conducting yourself in conformity with the Dhamma; having undertaken that Dhamma, you carry on.' Thus indeed, Cunda, the teacher therein is praiseworthy, the Dhamma therein is praiseworthy, and the disciple therein is thus praiseworthy. Whoever, Cunda, should speak thus of such a disciple: 'Surely the venerable one, practicing the right way (ñāya), will attain the right way'—then the one who praises, the one whom he praises, and the one who, being praised, arouses energy (vīriya) still more—all of them generate much merit. For what reason? Because so it is, Cunda, in a Dhamma-and-Discipline that is well expounded, well proclaimed, emancipating, conducive to peace, made known by a Perfectly Awakened One.
