[100] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Then, in the evening, the Venerable Mahācunda emerged from seclusion (paṭisallāna) and approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Mahācunda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, these various views (diṭṭhi) arise in the world, connected with doctrines of self or connected with doctrines of the world. Now, venerable sir, for a bhikkhu attending only to the beginning, does the abandoning of these views come about in this way, does the relinquishment of these views come about in this way?"
