[128] "But might there be, friend, … ?" … The Venerable Sāriputta said: "There might be, friends. When, friends, a noble disciple understands ignorance (avijjā), understands the origin of ignorance, understands the cessation of ignorance, and understands the way of practice leading to the cessation of ignorance — to that extent too, friends, a noble disciple is one of right view, whose view has gone straight, who is possessed of confirmed confidence in the Dhamma, and who has arrived at this true Dhamma (saddhamma).
"And what, friends, is ignorance, what is the origin of ignorance, what is the cessation of ignorance, what is the way of practice leading to the cessation of ignorance? Not knowing (aññāṇa) with regard to suffering (dukkha), not knowing with regard to the origin of suffering, not knowing with regard to the cessation of suffering, not knowing with regard to the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering — this, friends, is called ignorance. With the origin of the taints (āsava) there is the origin of ignorance; with the cessation of the taints there is the cessation of ignorance; and this very Noble Eightfold Path is the way of practice leading to the cessation of ignorance, that is: right view … right concentration (samādhi).
"When, friends, a noble disciple thus understands ignorance, thus understands the origin of ignorance, thus understands the cessation of ignorance, and thus understands the way of practice leading to the cessation of ignorance, then, having entirely abandoned the underlying tendency (anusaya) to lust, having dispelled the underlying tendency to aversion, having extirpated the underlying tendency to the view and conceit 'I am,' having abandoned ignorance and aroused true knowledge (vijjā), he becomes a maker of an end of suffering in this very life — to that extent too, friends, a noble disciple is one of right view, whose view has gone straight, who is possessed of confirmed confidence in the Dhamma, and who has arrived at this true Dhamma."
