[139] And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu dwell contemplating feeling (vedanā) in feelings?
Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu, when feeling a pleasant feeling, clearly knows: 'I feel a pleasant feeling'; when feeling a painful feeling, he clearly knows: 'I feel a painful feeling'; when feeling a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, he clearly knows: 'I feel a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling.' When feeling a pleasant feeling of the flesh (sāmisa), he clearly knows: 'I feel a pleasant feeling of the flesh'; or when feeling a pleasant feeling not of the flesh (nirāmisa), he clearly knows: 'I feel a pleasant feeling not of the flesh.' When feeling a painful feeling of the flesh, he clearly knows: 'I feel a painful feeling of the flesh'; or when feeling a painful feeling not of the flesh, he clearly knows: 'I feel a painful feeling not of the flesh.' When feeling a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling of the flesh, he clearly knows: 'I feel a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling of the flesh'; or when feeling a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling not of the flesh, he clearly knows: 'I feel a neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling not of the flesh.'
Thus he dwells contemplating feeling in feelings internally, or he dwells contemplating feeling in feelings externally, or he dwells contemplating feeling in feelings both internally and externally. He dwells contemplating in feelings the nature of origination (samudaya), or he dwells contemplating in feelings the nature of vanishing, or he dwells contemplating in feelings the nature of both origination and vanishing. Or else his mindfulness is established that 'there is feeling,' just to the extent necessary for knowledge (ñāṇa) and for continued mindfulness; and he dwells independent, not clinging to anything in the world. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating feeling in feelings.
Here ends the establishment of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) by contemplation of feelings.
