[160] Then, in the morning, the Venerable Sāriputta dressed and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Vesālī for alms. And the Venerable Sāriputta heard Sunakkhatta the Licchavi son speaking these words in an assembly at Vesālī: "The ascetic Gotama has no distinction in knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision surpassing the human state (uttari manussadhammā), adequate to the noble ones. The ascetic Gotama teaches a Dhamma hammered out by reasoning, following his own line of investigation, as it occurs to him; and the Dhamma taught by him for whatever purpose leads the one who practices accordingly to the complete destruction of suffering (dukkha)."
Then the Venerable Sāriputta, having walked for alms in Vesālī, after the meal, on returning from his almsround, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Sāriputta said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi son, who not long ago departed from this Dhamma and Discipline, speaks these words in an assembly at Vesālī: 'The ascetic Gotama has no distinction in knowledge and vision surpassing the human state, adequate to the noble ones. The ascetic Gotama teaches a Dhamma hammered out by reasoning, following his own line of investigation, as it occurs to him; and the Dhamma taught by him for whatever purpose leads the one who practices accordingly to the complete destruction of suffering.'"
