[171] Here, Sāriputta, having encompassed the mind (citta) of a certain individual with my own mind, I understand him thus: 'This individual is practicing in such a way, conducting himself in such a way, and has entered upon such a path that, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he will arise in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell.' Then at a later time, with the divine eye, which is purified and surpasses the human, I see him — with the breaking up of the body, after death, arisen in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell — experiencing feelings (vedanā) that are exclusively painful, sharp, and bitter. Suppose, Sāriputta, there were a pit of coals deeper than a man's height, full of glowing coals without flame and without smoke; and then a man were to come along, scorched by the heat, overcome by the heat, weary, thirsty, and parched, heading by a path going in one way only toward that very pit of coals. A man with good eyes, on seeing him, would say thus: 'This good man is practicing in such a way, conducting himself in such a way, and has entered upon such a path that he will arrive at this very pit of coals.' Then at a later time he would see him fallen into that pit of coals, experiencing feelings that are exclusively painful, sharp, and bitter. In just the same way, Sāriputta, having encompassed the mind of a certain individual here with my own mind, I understand him thus: 'This individual is practicing in such a way, conducting himself in such a way, and has entered upon such a path that, with the breaking up of the body, after death, he will arise in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a place of ruin, hell.'
