[21] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, be my heirs in the Dhamma (dhammadāyādā); do not be my heirs in material things (āmisadāyādā). I have sympathy for you, thinking: 'How might my disciples become heirs in the Dhamma, not heirs in material things?'
Bhikkhus, if you should become my heirs in material things and not heirs in the Dhamma, then by that you too would be liable to reproach: 'The Teacher's disciples dwell as heirs in material things, not as heirs in the Dhamma.' And I too by that would be liable to reproach: 'The Teacher's disciples dwell as heirs in material things, not as heirs in the Dhamma.'
Bhikkhus, if you should become my heirs in the Dhamma and not heirs in material things, then by that you would not be liable to reproach: 'The Teacher's disciples dwell as heirs in the Dhamma, not as heirs in material things.' And I too by that would not be liable to reproach: 'The Teacher's disciples dwell as heirs in the Dhamma, not as heirs in material things.'
Therefore, bhikkhus, be my heirs in the Dhamma; do not be my heirs in material things. I have sympathy for you, thinking: 'How might my disciples become heirs in the Dhamma, not heirs in material things?'"
