[212] "And what, Mahānāma, is the gratification (assāda) of sensual pleasures? There are, Mahānāma, these five cords of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇā). What five? Forms (rūpa) cognizable by the eye that are wished for, desired, agreeable, endearing, connected with sensuality, and provocative of lust; sounds cognizable by the ear ...; odours cognizable by the nose ...; tastes cognizable by the tongue ...; tangibles cognizable by the body that are wished for, desired, agreeable, endearing, connected with sensuality, and provocative of lust. These, Mahānāma, are the five cords of sensual pleasure. The pleasure and joy that arise in dependence on these five cords of sensual pleasure — this is the gratification of sensual pleasures."
