Dhammadāyādasutta

Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 12 · Section 24

[24] The Venerable Sāriputta said this: "To what extent, friends, while the Teacher dwells in seclusion (viveka), do the disciples not train in seclusion after him? Here, friends, while the Teacher dwells in seclusion, the disciples do not train in seclusion after him; and those things (dhammā) which the Teacher has said should be abandoned, they do not abandon; and they are luxurious and lax, leaders in backsliding, shirking the burden of seclusion. Herein, friends, the elder bhikkhus are blameworthy on three grounds. 'While the Teacher dwells in seclusion, the disciples do not train in seclusion after him' — on this first ground the elder bhikkhus are blameworthy. 'Those things which the Teacher has said should be abandoned, they do not abandon' — on this second ground the elder bhikkhus are blameworthy. 'They are luxurious and lax, leaders in backsliding, shirking the burden of seclusion' — on this third ground the elder bhikkhus are blameworthy. The elder bhikkhus, friends, are blameworthy on these three grounds. Herein, friends, the bhikkhus of middle standing … the newly ordained bhikkhus are blameworthy on three grounds. 'While the Teacher dwells in seclusion, the disciples do not train in seclusion after him' — on this first ground the newly ordained bhikkhus are blameworthy. 'Those things which the Teacher has said should be abandoned, they do not abandon' — on this second ground the newly ordained bhikkhus are blameworthy. 'They are luxurious and lax, leaders in backsliding, shirking the burden of seclusion' — on this third ground the newly ordained bhikkhus are blameworthy. The newly ordained bhikkhus, friends, are blameworthy on these three grounds. To this extent indeed, friends, while the Teacher dwells in seclusion, the disciples do not train in seclusion after him."
