Vitakkasaṇṭhānasutta

Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 12 · Section 261

[261] Bhikkhus, if, while that bhikkhu is giving attention to the stilling of the thought-formation (vitakkasaṅkhārasaṇṭhāna) of those thoughts, there still arise evil, unwholesome thoughts (vitakka) connected with desire, connected with hatred, and connected with delusion, then, bhikkhus, that bhikkhu, with teeth clenched upon teeth and the tongue pressed against the palate, should restrain, subdue, and crush the mind (citta) with the mind. As he, with teeth clenched upon teeth and the tongue pressed against the palate, restrains, subdues, and crushes the mind with the mind, whatever evil, unwholesome thoughts connected with desire, connected with hatred, and connected with delusion there are — these are abandoned, these go to extinction. With the abandoning of these, the mind becomes steady just internally, settles down, becomes unified, and becomes concentrated (samādhi). Bhikkhus, just as a strong man, having seized a weaker man by the head, or by the throat, or by the shoulder, might restrain him, subdue him, and crush him — even so, bhikkhus, if, while that bhikkhu is giving attention to the stilling of the thought-formation of those thoughts, there still arise evil, unwholesome thoughts connected with desire, connected with hatred, and connected with delusion, then, bhikkhus, that bhikkhu, with teeth clenched upon teeth and the tongue pressed against the palate, should restrain, subdue, and crush the mind with the mind. With the abandoning of these, the mind becomes steady just internally, settles down, becomes unified, and becomes concentrated.
