[272] Bhikkhus, even if bandits, low-down villains, were to sever you limb from limb with a two-handled saw, even then whoever should give rise to a mind of hatred toward them would not thereby be one who carries out my teaching. Even in that case, bhikkhus, you should train thus: 'Our mind (citta) will not be altered, nor shall we utter any evil speech; we shall abide compassionate for their welfare, with minds of loving-kindness, without inner hatred. We shall abide pervading that person with a mind imbued with loving-kindness; and taking that as a basis, we shall abide pervading the entire world with a mind imbued with loving-kindness—abundant, exalted, immeasurable, without enmity, without ill will (byāpāda).' Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train.
