Alagaddūpamasutta

Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 12 · Section 285

[285] Bhikkhus, seeing thus, the instructed noble disciple becomes disenchanted with form (rūpa), becomes disenchanted with feeling (vedanā), becomes disenchanted with perception (saññā), becomes disenchanted with volitional formations (saṅkhārā), becomes disenchanted with consciousness (viññāṇa). Being disenchanted, he becomes dispassionate; through dispassion he is liberated; when liberated, there is the knowledge (ñāṇa): "Liberated." He understands: "Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is no more coming to any state of being." Bhikkhus, this bhikkhu is called "one who has lifted the cross-bar," also "one whose moat is filled in," also "one whose pillar has been pulled up," also "one whose bolt is withdrawn," and also "a noble one whose banner is lowered, whose burden is laid down, who is detached." And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one who has lifted the cross-bar? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned ignorance (avijjā), cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, done away with it, so that it is no longer subject to arising in the future. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one who has lifted the cross-bar. And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one whose moat is filled in? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned the volitional formation of birth that leads to renewed existence, cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, done away with it, so that it is no longer subject to arising in the future. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one whose moat is filled in. And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one whose pillar has been pulled up? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned craving (taṇhā), cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, done away with it, so that it is no longer subject to arising in the future. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one whose pillar has been pulled up. And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one whose bolt is withdrawn? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned the five lower fetters (saṃyojana), cut them off at the root, made them like a palm stump, done away with them, so that they are no longer subject to arising in the future. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu one whose bolt is withdrawn. And how, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu a noble one whose banner is lowered, whose burden is laid down, who is detached? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned the conceit "I am" (asmimāna), cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, done away with it, so that it is no longer subject to arising in the future. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, is a bhikkhu a noble one whose banner is lowered, whose burden is laid down, who is detached.
