[310] Therein, bhikkhus, the fourth group of ascetics and brahmins considered thus: ‘Those first ascetics and brahmins … Thus those first ascetics and brahmins did not escape Māra's power (iddhānubhāva). And those second ascetics and brahmins considered thus: “Those first ascetics and brahmins … Thus those first ascetics and brahmins did not escape Māra's power. Suppose we …” … Thus those second ascetics and brahmins did not escape Māra's power. And those third ascetics and brahmins considered thus: “Those first ascetics and brahmins … Thus those first ascetics and brahmins did not escape Māra's power. And those second ascetics and brahmins considered thus: ‘Those first ascetics and brahmins … Thus those first ascetics and brahmins did not escape Māra's power. Suppose we …’ … Thus those second ascetics and brahmins too did not escape Māra's power. Suppose we were to make our lair in dependence upon that seed (nivāpa) sown by Māra and those material enticements of the world (lokāmisa); having made our lair there, … that seed sown by Māra and those material enticements of the world … not intruding, eating foods without infatuation, we shall not fall into intoxication; not being intoxicated, we shall not fall into negligence; not being negligent, we shall not be such as Māra can do with as he wishes on account of that seed and those material enticements of the world.” They made their lair in dependence upon that seed sown by Māra and those material enticements of the world; having made their lair there, not intruding upon that seed sown by Māra and those material enticements of the world, they ate foods without infatuation. Eating foods there without intruding and without infatuation, they did not fall into intoxication; not being intoxicated, they did not fall into negligence; not being negligent, they were not such as Māra could do with as he wished on account of that seed and those material enticements of the world. But still, they were of such views as: “The world is eternal” — thus, … — “A Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death” — thus. Thus those third ascetics and brahmins too did not escape Māra's power. Suppose we were to make our lair where Māra and Māra's assembly cannot go; having made our lair there, we shall eat foods without intruding upon that seed sown by Māra and those material enticements of the world, and without infatuation; not intruding, eating foods without infatuation, we shall not fall into intoxication; not being intoxicated, we shall not fall into negligence; not being negligent, we shall not be such as Māra can do with as he wishes on account of that seed and those material enticements of the world.’ They made their lair where Māra and Māra's assembly cannot go; having made their lair there, not intruding upon that seed sown by Māra and those material enticements of the world, they ate foods without infatuation. Eating foods there without intruding and without infatuation, they did not fall into intoxication; not being intoxicated, they did not fall into negligence; not being negligent, they were not such as Māra could do with as he wished on account of that seed and those material enticements of the world. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, those fourth ascetics and brahmins escaped Māra's power. Just as that fourth herd of deer, bhikkhus, so, I say, are these fourth ascetics and brahmins comparable to them.
