[329] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jetavana, the park of Anāthapiṇḍika. Now at that time the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi was driving out of Sāvatthī in the middle of the day in an all-white chariot drawn by mares. The brahmin Jāṇussoṇi saw the wanderer (paribbājaka) Pilotika coming in the distance; and having seen him, he said this to the wanderer Pilotika: "Well now, where is the worthy Vacchāyana coming from in the middle of the day?"
"Sir, I am coming from the presence of the ascetic Gotama."
"What does the worthy think of the ascetic Gotama's lucidity of wisdom? Does he consider him wise?"
"Sir, who am I to know the ascetic Gotama's lucidity of wisdom? Surely only one who was his equal could know the ascetic Gotama's lucidity of wisdom."
"Indeed, the worthy Vacchāyana praises the ascetic Gotama with lofty praise."
"Sir, who am I to praise the ascetic Gotama? That worthy Gotama is himself praised by the praised as the best of gods and humans."
"But seeing what good reason is the worthy Vacchāyana so full of confidence in the ascetic Gotama?"
