[357] Here again, brahmin, a certain person … "perhaps an end of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha) might be discerned." Having thus gone forth, he generates gain, honor, and fame. He is not pleased with that gain, honor, and fame; his intention is not yet fulfilled. He does not exalt himself nor disparage others on account of that gain, honor, and fame. And with regard to other dhammas higher and more excellent than gain, honor, and fame, he generates desire (chanda) and strives for the realization of those dhammas; he is not slack in his conduct, nor lax. He achieves accomplishment in virtue (sīla). He is pleased with that accomplishment in virtue, but his intention is not yet fulfilled. He does not exalt himself nor disparage others on account of that accomplishment in virtue. And with regard to other dhammas higher and more excellent than accomplishment in virtue, he generates desire and strives for the realization of those dhammas; he is not slack in his conduct, nor lax. He achieves accomplishment in concentration (samādhi). He is pleased with that accomplishment in concentration, and his intention is fulfilled. On account of that accomplishment in concentration he exalts himself and disparages others: "I am concentrated, my mind (citta) unified; but these other bhikkhus are unconcentrated, their minds gone astray." And with regard to other dhammas higher and more excellent than accomplishment in concentration, he does not generate desire nor strive for the realization of those dhammas; he is slack in his conduct, and lax. Just as, brahmin, that man in need of heartwood, seeking heartwood, wandering in search of heartwood, when a great tree possessed of heartwood stands there, passing over the very heartwood and passing over the sapwood, cuts off the bark, takes it, and departs, imagining it to be heartwood; and whatever purpose of his was to be served by heartwood, that purpose of his will not be accomplished — even so, brahmin, do I declare this person to be.
