[384] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, a cowherd endowed with eleven factors is incapable of tending a herd of cattle and making it prosper. With what eleven? Here, bhikkhus, a cowherd does not know form, is not skilled in characteristics, does not remove flies' eggs, does not cover wounds, does not make smoke, does not know the ford, does not know what has been drunk, does not know the road, is not skilled in pastures, milks dry leaving nothing over, and does not honor with special veneration those bulls who are the fathers of the herd and the leaders of the herd. Endowed with these eleven factors, bhikkhus, a cowherd is incapable of tending a herd of cattle and making it prosper.
In the same way, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu endowed with eleven qualities is incapable of attaining growth, increase, and maturity in this Dhamma and Discipline (dhammavinaya). With what eleven? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu does not know form, is not skilled in characteristics, does not remove flies' eggs, does not cover wounds, does not make smoke, does not know the ford, does not know what has been drunk, does not know the road, is not skilled in pastures, milks dry leaving nothing over, and does not honor with special veneration those bhikkhus who are elders, of long standing (rattaññū), long gone forth, fathers of the Saṅgha and leaders of the Saṅgha."
