[390] "Bhikkhus, once in the past there was a Magadhan cowherd of intelligent nature who, in the last month of the rains, in the autumn season, having inspected the near shore of the river Gaṅgā and having inspected the far shore, drove his cattle across at the very ford to the northern shore of the Videhas. He first drove across those bulls who were the fathers and leaders of the herd; they cut across the stream of the Gaṅgā and went safely to the far shore. Then he drove across the strong cattle and the cattle in training; they too cut across the stream of the Gaṅgā and went safely to the far shore. Then he drove across the young steers and young heifers; they too cut across the stream of the Gaṅgā and went safely to the far shore. Then he drove across the calves and the lean and feeble ones; they too cut across the stream of the Gaṅgā and went safely to the far shore. Bhikkhus, once in the past a tender calf, only just born, being borne along by the lowing of its mother — that one too cut across the stream of the Gaṅgā and went safely to the far shore. Why was that? Because of his wisdom; for, bhikkhus, that Magadhan cowherd of intelligent nature, in the last month of the rains, in the autumn season, having inspected the near shore of the river Gaṅgā and having inspected the far shore, drove his cattle across at the very ford to the northern shore of the Videhas. Even so, bhikkhus, as for any ascetics or brahmins who are skilled in this world, skilled in the other world, skilled in Māra's domain (māradheyya), skilled in what is not Māra's domain, skilled in Death's domain (maccudheyya), skilled in what is not Death's domain — for those who think them worth listening to and worth placing faith in, that will be for their welfare and happiness for a long time."
