Mahāsaccakasutta

Suttapiṭaka · Majjhimanikāya · Vol. 12 · Section 420

[420] Then, Aggivessana, this occurred to me: "Suppose I were to meditate in the breathless meditative absorption (jhāna)." So, Aggivessana, I cut off the in-breaths and out-breaths through the mouth, the nose, and the ears. When the in-breaths and out-breaths were cut off through the mouth, the nose, and the ears, there were extremely severe pains in my head. Just as if, Aggivessana, a strong man were to fasten a head-binding upon my head with a tough leather strap, even so, Aggivessana, when the in-breaths and out-breaths were cut off through the mouth, the nose, and the ears, there were extremely severe pains in my head. And yet, Aggivessana, my energy was aroused and unflagging, my mindfulness was established and unconfused; but my body was overwrought and not tranquil, because I was overwhelmed by that painful striving. But even such painful feeling (vedanā) as arose did not invade my mind (citta) and remain.
